The Wheaton Municipal Band Swings with its Jazz Concert
The Wheaton Municipal Band presents Jazz in Memorial Park on Thursday, June 11 at 8:00 p.m. Special guest conductor Doug Beach gives the opening downbeat and the band swings through jazz standards to the toe tapping sounds of the big band era.
The 20-member ensemble is comprised of some of the areas great jazz artists and auditioned members of the Wheaton Municipal Band. Don’t let the small size fool you, this group can pack a punch and fill the park with lively jazz harmonies and rhythms.
The maestro for the evening, Doug Beach, is part of the Elmhurst College music faculty and directs the acclaimed Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Beach is one of the leading publishers of educational jazz music and has won over 15 awards for composition from the American Society of Composers. Beach brings his own arrangements to the Wheaton stage to ignite the fiery jazz sound. As always with the Wheaton Municipal Band concerts, the group has only one rehearsal, but oh can they play. Their polished ensemble sound wows the crowd.
